Jack was informed that the meeting place was always by the head of the spring. Each party was allowed to bring only three people.

The Gooch showed up with only two, while Jack was escorted by the Reagans. It immediately became obvious that Cole and Daisy weren’t happy about his presence, either at the camp or the spring.

“You know the rules,” Cole snapped before Jack was even introduced. “No newcomers are to be accepted without the consent of both sides.”

“We only found the commander late yesterday,” Shelly defended. “He was in a bad state and unable to do little more than walk. We were going to raise our flag and inform you today. You just beat us to the punch.”

“He can’t stay,” Daisy spouted, the venom clear in her voice. “There’s not enough food for those who earned a place in our community, let alone some vagabond who claims to be part of the military.”

“I am a Commander in the US Navy, ma’am,” Jack interrupted. “Say what you will, but I won’t be denied the title that I have earned.”

“And just where are you from, Commander?”

“My submarine, the USS Utah, docked in San Diego a short time ago. After we found the base and city nearly abandoned, my captain gave extended leave to any members of the crew that wanted to seek out their families elsewhere.”

Jack’s words didn’t sit well with the Gooch leadership. “So, you’re claiming that San Diego is empty? There are no people left there at all?” Cole asked, his voice dripping with accusation.

“No, sir, that’s not what I said. There are isolated pockets of people here and there … a few hundred at most. We found one, almost-dead, survivor at the naval base.”

Both Cole and his wife seemed a little taken aback by Jack’s report. “So where did the people go?” Daisy asked, Jack’s news taking her tone down to almost a whisper.

“Unknown, ma’am. I encountered thousands of bodies, but not enough to account for the entire city. The highway systems were completely jam-packed with vehicles. I am assuming that a lot of people tried to evacuate, but I can’t say that for sure.”

Looking at his wife, Cole said, “Probably headed north for LA.”

“If they did, they didn’t survive,” Jack added in a low, sad tone. “Los Angeles is gone. Completely wiped out. The Pacific Ocean now occupies what was downtown Long Beach. We spotted the hull of an ocean-going cargo ship resting several miles inland. I’m afraid the entire Western Seaboard has suffered the same fate.”

“Bullshit!” Cole barked, suddenly flashing red with anger. “You’re just telling us this crap because you’re on their side,” he continued, pointing an accusing finger and Shelly and Phillip.

Shelly pushed back, hard. “You remember the video we saw on the news at the truck stop. You saw the tsunami. You know damn good and well what he is saying is true.”

“A flood doesn’t mean the entire city just disappeared. This guy is full of shit, plain and simple.”

Jack bowed up, not accustomed to being called a liar.
